Okay moms, let me tell you about one of my favorite FREE things to do around here . the Maryville-Alcoa Greenway! 🚴♀️
This isn't just a trail . it's basically a magical ribbon of paved paths that connects downtown Maryville with Alcoa, and honestly, it's become our go-to spot for everything from morning walks to weekend adventures.
Why we love it:
Length that works for everyone: The main stretch is 9 miles, but you don't need to do the whole thing! You can walk one block or commit to the full ride. My kids have done everything from stroller walks to their first "big kid" bike rides on this.
Scenery that doesn't feel like work: The trail winds along Pistol Creek . there's even a little waterfall spot that the kids keep discovering and calling "the secret spot." It's not like climbing a mountain or anything, but it feels like an adventure.
Multiple parking options: Don't want to drive all the way to Alcoa? Park at Bicentennial Greenbelt Park behind the courthouse . free parking, and you're right on the trail. There are other access points scattered along the way if you want to pick up where your friends are.
Actually accessible: I love that this works for strollers, wheelchairs, beginner walkers . anyone can do it. The path is paved the whole way, and it's mostly flat with just a few gentle hills.
Spring is magic here: Right now (April) the wildflowers are popping up, the creek is flowing nice and strong, and the temperature is actually bearable. No humid sweaty walk in August heat . just perfect spring weather.
Pro tips from a mom who's done this a dozen times:
- Parking: The Bicentennial Greenbelt lot (behind the courthouse) is my go-to. It's easy to find, free, and has restrooms nearby.
- Start early: Mornings are quieter, especially on weekends. The afternoon crew shows up around 2-4pm.
- Bring water: There's no water fountain along the trail, so pack a small cooler or water bottles if you're doing more than a quick loop.
- Bike vs. walk: The kids love biking, but honestly, I prefer just walking and letting them explore. We stop a lot . at the creek, to look at the waterfall, to feed the ducks (bring crackers).
- Extension possibilities: You can continue all the way to Springbrook Park in Alcoa if you're feeling ambitious. We've done this on our "big adventure" days.
What to expect:
- Time: 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how much you explore
- Cost: Absolutely free
- Ages: Literally everyone . I've seen newborns in strollers and grandkids on bikes
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate (mostly flat, paved surface)
- What to bring: Water, sunscreen, snacks, comfortable shoes/rollers/bikes
My honest assessment: This is THE perfect spring activity in Maryville. It's free, it's beautiful, it's safe, and it gets the kids moving without feeling like a chore. Plus, you're building memories and maybe some endurance for future hiking adventures.
Note: The full trail system is actually 18+ miles when you count all the loops and spurs, but the main Maryville-to-Alcoa section (9 miles) is the star. You can do it in sections, or commit to the whole thing if you're feeling ambitious!
🚴♀️ Mary personally rode this trail last weekend with the kids. We stopped for 45 minutes at the creek spot, fed some ducks, and made it to the halfway point before calling it a "good adventure." Next time we're doing the full loop . maybe.
