Dogwood Arts Festival has become Knoxvilles biggest spring celebration, and for good reason. This is the kind of festival where you can spend the whole day wandering from art booth to music stage, grabbing a bite, and just soaking in the atmosphere.
The Art: The juried art show is the heart of it, with over 200 artists from across the country set up in tents along the park. It ranges from traditional painting and sculpture to ceramics, jewelry, and the kind of quirky handmade stuff youll never find in a store. Bring cash for small pieces, but honestly, even the big-ticket items are worth the splurge if youre decorating a new place.
The Music: Six stages, all free, all day long. Youve got everything from bluegrass and gospel to rock and hip-hop. The main stage fills up by late afternoon, but if you want a quieter spot, wander down to the smaller stages along the creek. My kids loved the puppet shows and the face paintingβtotally free and way better than the usual mall variety.
The Food: There are food trucks and vendors scattered throughout, though the lines can get long around noon. Pro tip: grab lunch early or wait until after 2pm. The menu is pretty standard festival fare (tacos, burgers, cotton candy), but the atmosphere makes it all worth it.
Kids: Face painting, balloon artists, kids art zonesβthey really do think about families. The whole park is stroller-friendly, and there are plenty of bathrooms (youll be grateful for that). Bring a blanket for lawn sitting, comfortable shoes, and sun protection. It gets crowded, especially on weekends.
When: Usually the first full week of April. This year it runs through April 13th. Open daily 10am-9pm, or until the artists pack up for the night.
Pro tip: Go on a weekday morning if you can. Youll actually be able to see the art, talk to the artists, and not be shoulder-to- shoulder with three hundred other people.
Note: This is Knoxville, not Maryville, but its only 20-25 minutes from downtown Maryville depending on traffic, and its worth the drive. Plan it as a half-day or full-day outing and make a day of it.
