Civics & Local History
Patriotic Education With Real Substance
I believe kids should grow up loving their country - not because someone told them to, but because they understand what makes it worth loving. That means going deeper than slogans and flag-waving. It means learning the actual stories, the real heroes, the ideas that built this nation, and the responsibilities that come with being a citizen.
The civics strand covers:
- American symbols and holidays - the flag, the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance, and what they actually mean
- National holidays - not just days off, but the stories behind them (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day)
- American heroes - real people who showed courage, sacrifice, and leadership
- Government basics - how laws are made, what the president does, what local government looks like right here in Maryville
- Citizenship and rights - what it means to be a citizen, our rights, and our responsibilities to each other
- Character and service - honesty, courage, responsibility, respect, and serving your community
Grade Progression
Kindergarten - Grade 1: Gratitude and Belonging
Your youngest kids are learning to be thankful for their country, their community, and the people who serve. Simple introductions to the flag, the Pledge, national holidays, and community helpers. At this age, civics is mostly about gratitude, respect, and belonging.
Singing "America the Beautiful" on a clear day when you can see the Smokies? That is civics for a five-year-old.

Second and third graders dig deeper into American heroes (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr.), the stories behind national holidays, basic rights and responsibilities, and what it means to be a good citizen in your community. Character traits like honesty, courage, and service get woven into every lesson.

Grades 4-5: Founding Ideas and Civic Responsibility
Fourth and fifth graders are ready for the big ideas: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the three branches of government, how elections work, and what self-governance really means. They are also learning about civic responsibility, service, and what it looks like to be an active, informed citizen.
This is a great age to visit the local courthouse, attend a city council meeting, or volunteer together as a family. Civics is not just something you read about; it is something you live.
