🌱 The Magic of Seeds
Materials: Dry beans (lima or kidney), a clear plastic cup, wet paper towels, water
Most kids think plants just "appear" in the dirt, but the real magic happens inside the seed. A seed is like a tiny lunchbox; it has everything the baby plant needs to start growing until it can reach the sun.
What To Do
- The Soak: Put a few dry beans in a glass of water overnight. The next morning, let your child touch them. They will notice the beans are plump and the skin might be slightly wrinkled. Explain that the seed is "waking up."
- The Window Bed: Fold a paper towel and tuck it into a clear plastic cup. Slide a few soaked beans between the towel and the side of the cup so you can see them.
- The Wait: Keep the paper towel damp (not soaking!). Put the cup on a sunny windowsill.
- The Discovery: Check every day. In a few days, a tiny white root will pop out. This is the plant searching for water. Soon after, a small green shoot will head upward toward the light.
Why This Works
By using a clear cup instead of soil, we remove the mystery. Kids get to see the root happen first - which is the most important part - before the stem appears. This builds a concrete understanding of how plants actually function.
Pro Tips
- Use lima beans if you can; they are huge and much easier for little eyes to track.
- If the towel dries out, the seed will stop growing. Make this a "morning job" for your child to check the water level.
- Once the plant has a few leaves, you can move it to a real pot of soil in the yard!
