Why I Designed the Math Curriculum This Way
Math is the subject that makes homeschool parents the most nervous. I know because I hear it constantly.
"I was never good at math." "I don't know if I'm teaching it right." "My kid cries every time we open the math book."
I get it. Math carries baggage. Most of us grew up with timed tests and drill sheets and the horrible feeling of being called to the board to solve something we didn't understand while the whole class watched. That kind of experience doesn't just go away because you're now the teacher instead of the student.
But here's what I learned studying education, and what I've confirmed teaching my own three kids: math anxiety is almost never about math. It's about being asked to do something abstract before you understand it concretely. It's about speed being valued over understanding. It's about skipping steps that feel basic but are actually foundational.
The math sections of Mary's K-5 Curriculum are designed to undo all of that.
Where Kids Get Stuck (And Why)
After years of studying this and teaching it at my own kitchen table, here are the patterns I see:
Number sense gets rushed. Programs jump to addition before kids truly understand what numbers mean. A child who can count to 20 but can't tell you that 7 is more than 5 without counting on their fingers doesn't have number sense yet. They have number memorization. And building operations on top of memorization is like building a house on sand.
Abstract notation comes too early. Writing "3 + 4 = 7" on paper is abstract. A five-year-old putting three blocks next to four blocks and counting seven blocks is concrete. These are not the same thing, and most programs treat them like they are. Kids need the concrete version first, sometimes for weeks or months, before the written version makes sense.
Multiplication gets reduced to memorization. "Just memorize your times tables" is the advice that has failed generations of kids. Memorization without understanding means the facts don't stick, and when they're needed for division and fractions later, the whole thing collapses. Kids need to understand what multiplication means (equal groups, arrays, repeated addition) before they drill the facts.
Fractions feel like a completely new subject. If fractions aren't connected to what kids already know about fair sharing, about dividing a pizza, about splitting things equally, they feel like an alien concept dropped from nowhere. The transition from whole numbers to fractions is where more kids lose confidence in math than at any other point in elementary school.
How the Curriculum Addresses This
K-1 Math: Concrete, Slow, and Real
The K-1 math lessons start with counting, not as a song but as a real skill with real objects. One-to-one correspondence. Comparing quantities. Sorting and classifying. Patterns.
Then, and only then, addition and subtraction within 5. With blocks. With crackers. With buttons from a jar. Not with worksheets. Not yet.
Every lesson tells the parent exactly what to use, what to say, and what to do when the child doesn't get it. Because "my kid doesn't get it" at 9 AM on a Tuesday is not the time to open a teaching manual. You need three sentences: here's what's happening, here's what to try, here's when to stop and come back tomorrow.
2-3 Math: Building Real Understanding
The 2-3 math lessons build fact strategies that actually stick. Not "just memorize doubles," but here's what doubles means, here's why near-doubles works, here's how making 10 is a shortcut your brain can use.
Place value is taught with beans and cups because your child needs to physically build the number 47 with 4 groups of ten and 7 ones before the written notation makes any sense.
Multiplication starts with equal groups. Real objects in real groups that your child can see and count. 3 groups of 4 crackers. 5 groups of 2 buttons. Arrays made from coins. The abstract notation comes after the understanding, not before.
Time and money are taught with real clocks and real coins because I have yet to meet a child who learned to tell time from a worksheet.
4-5 Math: Independence and Reasoning
The 4-5 math lessons tackle the big stuff: multi-digit operations, fractions, division, area and perimeter. But every lesson connects back to something concrete.
Fractions start with pizza and pie and folding paper, not with "the number on top is the numerator." Equivalent fractions are proven with fraction strips the child can hold and compare, not with cross-multiplication they don't understand.
Division is introduced as sharing equally, something every kid with siblings already understands intuitively. "If you have 12 grapes and 3 kids, how many does each kid get?" That's division. The notation is just a way to write down what they already know.
This Still Requires a Dedicated Parent
I want to be straight with you. I did not build a math app. I did not build a platform where your child clicks through problems on a screen while you fold laundry.
I built a guide for a dedicated homeschool mother or father who is sitting at the table with their child, working through problems together, watching their face to see when something clicks and when something doesn't.
I designed it this way because I believe the best math instruction happens between a parent and a child with a handful of blocks between them. Not between a child and a screen.
The curriculum gives you a proven path. The sequence is researched and tested. The progressions follow how children actually develop mathematical thinking, not how textbook companies organize their chapters. Every lesson has a parent script, a struggle guide, and a challenge version.
But you're the one walking the path with your child. You're the one who notices when they need to slow down. You're the one who celebrates when something finally clicks. You're the one who makes it feel safe to get something wrong.
That's not something a screen can do.
