The Spooktacular Extravaganza: Free Halloween Fun on West Broadway in Downtown Maryville, October 30
Friday, October 30 is the night to circle if you want a real, downtown Maryville Halloween without driving anywhere. That's when the Spooktacular Extravaganza takes over West Broadway Avenue from 5:00 to 8:00 PM — and it's free, run by the same Blount County Parks & Rec crew that organizes so much of what my kids love around here.
Here's how the night actually works, so you're not wandering around confused at 6:30 with a tired toddler:
The main event is trick-or-treating at downtown businesses. Kids come in costume with their candy bags and work their way down the designated stretch of West Broadway where shops and vendors hand out treats. It runs the full 5:00–8:00 PM window, so there's no rush to arrive exactly on time.
Around 7:00 PM, the costume showcase starts on the top level of the Maryville Municipal Parking Garage — that's where the bigger kids get to show off their costumes and the little ones watch. It's a fun way to break up the walk.
There's also a street dance party, carnival games, and food vendors set up at the top level of the parking garage, plus the area restaurants are open along the route. If you have a dog (or a pet who's good around crowds and other animals), the Howl-O-Ween dog costume contest is a separate, hilarious addition — entry is $5 per pet, and judging is based on categories like Most Original and Pet & Human Look Alike. Pets need to be on a leash and good with people in costumes.
The free stuff: All the trick-or-treating, carnival games, and contest viewing are free. The only thing that costs money is the dog contest entry, and whatever you choose to buy from the food vendors.
A few practical notes for parents: - This is an outdoor street event, rain or shine. West Broadway closes to traffic for the evening, which makes stroller walking much easier, but plan for the weather. - In case of heavy rain, some game activities move under cover to the Maryville Municipal Parking Garage, so the fun doesn't just cancel. - Port-a-potties are set up at the parking garage, with additional restrooms at Broadway United Methodist Church. - Parking can fill up on event nights — the municipal garage is the obvious spot, but arrive a little early if you want an easy walk.
The Spooktacular is put on by the Maryville-Alcoa-Blount County Parks & Recreation Commission along with the City of Maryville and the Downtown Maryville Alliance. It's one of those rare events that's genuinely free, genuinely fun for the under-10 crowd, and easy to get to without leaving town.
